Always pushing the envelope with their
cheeky lyrics and innovative sampling, Grammy Award winning collective; De La
Soul have been at the forefront of hip hop music since the late 80’s. With
smash hits ‘Me, Myself & I’ and ‘Ring Ring Ring (Ha Ha Hey)’ demonstrating
their gentler more eclectic take on hip hop, they continue to rock dance floors
almost 20 years on.
With their third album ‘Ziggurats’ released
earlier this year to rave reviews, The Beautiful Girls are taking the world by
storm. Currently on tour in the US to promote this release, these boys are
moving away from the surf rock sound they were originally known for and are
carving out a sophisticated sound all of their own. With gorgeous melodic
vocals, rootsy, dub basslines and an unexpected rock twist, this

Never one to be pigeonholed into a
particular genre;
Kid Confucius have established themselves
as a force to be reckoned with over the last few years. Having played countless
live shows across Australia and with the successful release of their debut self
titled album in 2005, this 8-piece Sydney band have continually kept toes
tappin and heads boppin with their mix of old school soul and modern hip hop.
Melbourne’s Custom Kings are not the type of band to follow fashion and fads. Instead, they create music that will challenge and captivate their audience whilst keeping your toes tapping and your head bopping and with the successful release of their debut album; ‘At Sea’; and hits including ‘Up Late’ and ‘Swimming in the Darkness’, they are clearly onto a good thing. With influences spanning from roots, hip hop, reggae and folk to straight up pop music, the Kings will have you jumping out of the hammock and onto the dance floor in no time.
Whimsical tales of love and loss is how Whitley’s debut album ‘The Submarine’ has been described. His delicate sound flirts the line between alt-country and indie-folk and with bittersweet symphonies such as ‘Lost in Time’ and ‘I Remember’; it’s hard to believe he was once a hardcore punk rocker. It’s not his musical transformation however that captivates his audiences but his stories of life and love that seem far beyond his years and his ability to move between the emotionally deep and the highly comical all in one show.
Dead Letter Chorus are relatively new to the Australian music scene, however their live shows and debut EP ‘Listen Carefully (We Shall Say This Only Once)’ are already making a big splash. At their first festival appearance as the headline act at the recent Newtown Festival, they received rave reviews for their dramatic & energetic performance. With the combination of Gabrielle’s angelic and haunting voice, Cameron’s raw vocal tones and the wistful dreamy melodies they sing along to; this Sydney 6-piece are certainly on the way to becoming the next big thing.
